Quantitative Risk Assessment

Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) is a structured and analytical method used to evaluate potential risks in industrial operations by quantifying the probability of hazardous events and their potential consequences.

QRA is essential in the oil and gas, petrochemical, and energy industries, where managing risk is critical to safety, compliance, and business continuity. It helps companies understand the magnitude of risk associated with various scenarios—such as fire, explosion, or toxic releases—and enables informed decisions to control and mitigate those risks.

What Does a QRA Include?

Our QRA studies typically cover the following elements:

  • Hazard Identification (HAZID): Understanding what could go wrong

  • Frequency Analysis: Estimating how likely an event is to occur

  • Consequence Modeling: Assessing the physical impact of incidents (e.g., thermal radiation, overpressure, toxic dispersion)

  • Risk Evaluation: Combining frequency and consequence to define overall risk

  • Risk Criteria Comparison: Benchmarking against international and client-specific risk tolerances

Recommendations: Proposing control measures to reduce risk to ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable)

Why QRA Matters

  • Supports decision-making in design, layout, and safety systems

  • Provides input to Safety Case development and regulatory submissions

  • Enhances protection of people, assets, and environment

  • Demonstrates compliance with local and international safety standards

  • Forms the foundation for Emergency Response Planning (ERP)
